In addition to our award-winning monitoring services and industry-leading response times, a critical element of Becklar Monitoring’s solution is to provide fully redundant monitoring centers that you can trust.
Monitoring Center Redundancy
Monitoring center redundancy refers to implementing backup systems and processes within the centers to ensure continuous operation and reliability, even in the event of hardware failures, software issues, natural disasters, or other emergencies.
There are different levels of redundancy:
- Cold Redundancy: Backup systems are available but not actively running. They require manual intervention to activate when needed.
- Warm Redundancy: Backup systems are running and configured but require manual switching in the event of a failure.
- Hot Redundancy: Backup systems are fully operational and automatically take over upon a primary system’s failure, ensuring seamless continuity.
A monitoring center consists of three core elements: operators, automation technologies, and telecommunications. Without one of these core elements, a monitoring center could not operate. At Becklar Monitoring, we have gone above and beyond to ensure the highest level of hot redundancy for our dealers across North America. We have duplicated essential systems and components to maintain functionality in the event of failures, allowing minimal downtime, business continuity, and ongoing protection for your subscribers.
UL Certification in the United States
In the United States, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) is a third-party safety inspection firm. It verifies corporate compliance, sustainability, transparency, security, and well-being in business operations and products.
At Becklar, we maintain certifications for all our monitoring centers to meet or exceed industry standards and to emphasize our commitment to excellence. Being UL listed helps communicate reliability and offers an extra layer of trust from the consumer perspective since the UL brand is directly connected with reliable products and services.
ULC Certification in Canada
Similarly, in Canada, Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC) specifies the requirements that an alarm company needs to appear on its list of accredited providers. While UL certification requirements in the United States remain unchanged, ULC has recently modified its regulations.
Beginning in January 2025, new redundancy requirements must be met to maintain ULC certification. In order to be a fully redundant, certified monitoring center in Canada, companies will need to have the following:
- Automation system servers and database maintained in redundant data centers
- Signal receiving center operators log into service via VPN to disposition signals
- Customers can only access their own information
- Automation software shall be capable of separating end users
- Customers/alarm service subscribers experience no difference in service
- Must follow the requirements of a signal receiving center (whole or in part)
Since the announcement, Becklar Monitoring has invested aggressively in our monitoring centers across Canada to meet or exceed the new ULC requirements.
Investment in Canada
In the past year, Becklar Monitoring has invested over $3 million in our new facility in Quebec. This investment was made to provide our Canadian dealers with unmatched state-of-the-art technology.
Our new technology in Canada includes:
- Configuration of data storage and server infrastructure, include industry-leading functionality with VMware
- Efficient automation software that will quickly process critical alarms
- Secure subscriber data – at rest or in transit
- Continuous system checks for vulnerabilities and unusual security events
- Addition of the Avaya Phone system, which utilizes the latest SIP technology as well as the innovative Avaya PBX
- Addition of our own block of IP addresses, as well as VMware VeloCloud SD-WAN technology to allow for extensive fiber paths
- Addition of a next generation firewall
